Reviews

In spite of a dusting of French academic verbiage, this well researched book is a compelling read, as it situates Degas in his historical milieu and helps us look at his pictures with fresh eyes and awakened minds. Not many art enthusiasts know that Degas' series of bathing nudes, which we now revere, were seen as offensive and repulsive by the art establishment of the time. His "Little Ballerina" sculpture evoked horror at the perceived degradation and ugliness of the girl's physiognomic type. Callen has a marvellous eye for detail, and moves back and forth between fine grained analysis of the images and the social context and mores in which they were created and viewed. I definitely recommend this.
